Note: Since this was a short adventure I will report most of the skill and combat rolls. As usual this adventure log is presented in bullet point fashion with limited narrative. I'm not interested in writing a detailed fictional account but you should get a good impression of what happened.

Adventure Phase

  • Hallas and Sigibert have spent the past couple of months, the end of Summer and beginning of the Autumn with their kin.
  • They arranged to reconvene in Lake Town and travel to Dale together because Gloin invited them to attend the anniversary of the Battle of the 5 Armies which happens in the last days of November.
  • The two travel by boat from Esgaroth and will stop at the Dragon's Head Inn which is located the Northern shore of the lake before they make their way to Dale.
  • Weather is: Gloomy skies, chilly weather (Weather: Perchance: TOR Palantir)
  • They discover that inn has been attacked and ransacked.
  • Hallas Awareness roll TN(14) 1d12+2d6: 7+2+3=12 Fail
  • Sigibert Hunting favoured roll TN(14) 2d12+3d6: G or 9+4+3+2=Auto Success
  • Sigibert notices blood stains on the wharf.
  • A man, Otar (who works at the inn), is found under the wharf. He tells Hallas and Sigibert that the inn was attacked by Goblins and Wolves. Some people were killed, some fled, some were captured.
  • Otar warns that they were led by a Great Orc and his Warg.
  • Some people come out of hiding from a nearby wooded area. They will look after Otar and bring him to Dale. They plead to Hallas and Sigibert to rescue those that have been kidnapped.
  • Sigibert will track the enemy.
  • My notes are incomplete here but it seems there were successful Hunting, Travel and Awareness rolls for Sigibert.
  • The fellowship follows tracks made by Goblins, Wolves and captives for a couple of hours but then Sigibert gets the sense this would be a good spot for an ambush. They must be careful.
  • Sigibert asks Hallas to scout ahead, in case his intuition is correct.
  • Hallas makes a Stealth roll.
  • Stealth Favoured (TN11) 2d12+3d6
  • G or 3+1+3+4 = Auto Success
  • Hallas comes back having spotted two Goblin Archers and their Wild Wolves who are waiting under a rock overhang. This keeps them out of direct sunlight but it is a poor place to stage an ambush from.

  • Hallas and Sigibert hear the cries and shouts of the captives who are held behind some bushes nearby.

  • The remaining captives are Theustal (Beorning), Aesvi (owner of the Dragon's Head Inn), Toka (maid), Miki and Fari (Laketowners).
  • Hallas and Sigibert are told by Theustal that the attack was led by a large Orc (Rigurz) and his huge wolf (Warg). He took a portion of the loot, including a map belonging to Theustal and Lysaker and left shortly after the attack.
  • Theustal explains that he and Lysaker travelled from their home, the village of Grenedun to meet with Dwarves in Dale. They were seeking permission to re-open an old Dwarven mine that is indicted on their map.
  • Unbeknownst to Theustal, Rigurz the Orc was aware of the map and believes it can help him locate an old Dwarf fort where it is believed treasure is still buried. Rigurz and his Goblin troupe discovered he was travelling with the map and attacked when he was most vulnerable. He left the Golbins behind as a distraction in order to make a clean getaway.
  • The captives are free and everyone is led back to the inn quickly and safely.
  • After a short rest everyone travels to Dale, on the way they are found by servants of King Bard and escorted back to the city.
  • Hallas and Sigibert are brought before the King to inform him of what happened.
  • In attendance are, Dain II Ironfoot, Legolas Greenleaf, Alisa (emissary of the Woodfolk) and Gandalf.
  • Hallas and Sigibert don't know these people, except Hallas recognises Legolas.
  • The King's guests are very interested in what has happened because there haven not been many attacks by Goblins and Orcs since the Battle of the 5 Armies.
  • Sigibert and Hallas want to make the most of their audience and do their best to present themselves as best they can.

  • The  King is impressed by the recounting of their deeds and now remembers he has heard of the two before.
  • King Bard exclaims: "As so you are Hallas and Sigibert. Gloin (their Patron) has told us about you two. I am grateful for what you have done. You shall be guests of honour at the banquet tonight."
  • Dain II promises Theustal to help the people of Grenedum re-open the mine.
  • Later that evening the old man in grey clothing approaches the two and asks more questions about the encounter with the Goblins and Wolves.
  • He introduces himself as Gandalf. Hallas is in awe, having heard of the wizard. Sigibert does not recognise the name but is polite to the old man.

Notes

This is the last adventure in what I consider the prologue to the Darkening of Mirkwood campaign. My aim was to give the characters experience, introduce them to important characters and to set up characters, adversaries and factions that may become relevant in the future.
