Crusaders of the Amber Coast - Part 2: The Stolen Maces - Dominion Rules RPG Play Report

Image
This is the second adventure report of a solo campaign set in the 13th Century during the Baltic Crusades using the free Dominion Rules RPG. I'm playing a mixture of a campaign (Crusaders of the Amber Coast) and my own generated adventures. My intention for this campaign is that it feels like a mixture of The Name of the Rose, the Witcher and the X-Files. Expect mysteries, intrigue, magic and action during a time of clashing cultures. The Christian Crusaders against the Pagan natives of the Baltic region. See the  Campaign Overview and Resources  for more details. While I'm inspired by the real history of the region and will do my best to respect it, ultimately I'm playing a game and readers should not look to my game reports for accurate history or my personal feelings about the people, cultures and events of this era. Today's scenario will be randomly generated and I'll show you how I go about doing that. I will use the  Ironsmith: Expanded Oracles  (which includ...

Crusaders of the Amber Coast - Part 1: The Raid - Dominion Rules RPG Play Report

Image
Here's the first report of my solo game set in the Baltic region during the early 13th century using the Dominion Rules RPG  (A free fantasy RPG that suits historical or gritty Sword & Sorcery settings) and an adventure from the campaign in the source book  Crusaders of the Amber Coast . I will 'railroad' myself through this first adventure, and possibly the next couple of scenarios, in order to set up NPCs, factions, character motivations and MacGuffins. I find that setting up the world in this way makes it easier to interact with and helps bounce off of what's already happening. Once there is momentum I can take more control. My reports will be written in a bullet point format. Enough to give you an idea of what's happening, a little bit of descriptive flavour, but not a fully fleshed out piece of fiction. I will record all the dice rolls including any oracle rolls. My preferred gamemaster emulator rules are  Motif Story Engine  and tables from Ironsworn ,...

Dominion Rules RPG character for a Baltic Crusades Solo RPG Game

Image
A Livonian Brother of the Sword A while back I had the idea of playing a solo game in some kind of 'Dark Fantasy' setting. Something gritty and low magic. The tone I was thinking of was The Name of the Rose crossed with the Witcher and the X-Files. While toying with the idea I created a character using the Dominion Rules , a free game that came to my attention through the solo RPG channel Me, Myself and Die:  MM&D S3 Dominion Eps 1: Stranger in a Strange Land . The system looks like it suits historical or gritty Sword & Sorcery settings with a more detailed combat procedure than most fantasy RPGs. Subsequently I started discovering resources for the Baltic area during the Middle Ages and decided that would make for a great setting ( Resources for a Baltic RPG Campaigns ). It's a time and place where I can dance on the edge of historical realism and fantasy. It so happened that the character that I had already created matches a Crusader for this time period. On top o...

Deciding on a system for a Dark Fantasy solo game

I'd like to run a solo game in a 'Dark Fantasy TM' home-brew world. I'm thinking of a late Antiquity to early Middle Ages technology level, perhaps inspired by the Byzantine / Eastern Roman Empire. I'll aim for a low to medium level of magic and the fantastical, perhaps some magi-tech. More fantastical than what I play with in my Sword & Sorcery Sundaland game  with the IronSworn system  but less so than the standard D&D fantasy world.  I'm considering a couple of different systems. Some of the things I'd like to have in the system. 1. Less 'narrative' than IronSworn but not too crunchy.  2. Characters are not (too) constricted by class.  3. Interesting character progression and customisation, not just +1s 4. Ability to adjust the level of magic easily. 3. Lots of content and adventures for me to use or borrow from. The systems I'm considering are: Adventurer Conquerer King II : This is a D&D variant that has a lot of rules for creati...
